Coming soon to the App Store · iPhone

Your Torah portion, one word at a time.

Deuteronomy 30:14
כִּֽי־קָר֥וֹבKi-karov אֵלֶ֛יךָelecha הַדָּבָ֖רhadavar מְאֹ֑דme'od בְּפִ֥יךָbeficha וּבִֽלְבָבְךָ֖uvilvavcha לַעֲשֹׂתֽוֹ׃la'asoto
“For the word is very close to you: in your mouth and in your heart, to do it.”

Each word lights up as it is read or chanted in the app, with the transliteration beneath it.

Real readers, your own verses, one word at a time. Enter the Bar Mitzvah date and Kol Aliyah finds the portion, its Haftarah and the exact verses, then lights each Hebrew word as a real reader reads or chants it, with the transliteration beneath. Practice a few words at a time, record yourself and take a test, all on your iPhone.

Real readers

Real people read it. Real people chant it.

Kol Aliyah plays recordings of real readers: a plain reading, to learn the words before the tune, and the chant in your synagogue’s melody, Sephardic or Ashkenazi. Pick the tune your community uses and change it any time. Both use Israeli pronunciation.

  • Spoken
  • Chanted, Sephardic
  • Chanted, Ashkenazi

Where no recording exists, a synthesised voice reads it: the blessings, and some Haftarah readings. The app says so. Who the readers are, and the licences, are on the sources page.

How it works

Three steps. Then practice anywhere.

  1. Set the date

Enter the date and where it will be. Kol Aliyah finds the portion and its Haftarah; you choose his aliyah and see its exact verses.

  2. Hear it, then say it

Each word lights up as it is read or chanted. Hear two words, say them back, then join them up, until the whole verse is his.

  3. Check yourself

Record a verse, or take the test: the app listens on the phone and marks every word. Parents get a readiness report.

  • Step by stepTwo words at a time, his turn after each, then the whole verse.
  • Slow it downEvery syllable, clearly, at his own pace.
  • Repeat a verseAgain and again, until it sticks.
  • Signs, vowels or scrollSwitch between chant marks, vowels and plain scroll letters.
  • Record yourselfHear how you sound next to the reading, then try again.
  • Test yourselfRead a verse alone; the app listens on the phone and marks each word.
  • The blessingsBefore and after the Torah reading and the Haftarah, word by word.
  • The HaftarahHis Haftarah too, learned the same way, with its blessings.
  • Readiness reportWhich verses are ready and which words need work, for parents.
  • Works offlineOnce his portion is on the phone, no connection needed.

Why Kol Aliyah

Built for the weeks before the day.

Kol Aliyah began with one boy getting ready for his Bar Mitzvah who does not read Hebrew. What worked was a few words at a time: hear them, say them back, watch each word light up.

It is a practice partner, not a replacement for your rabbi or tutor, who decides how your community reads and when he is ready.
